Daily Reflection: Addendum | Galatians 3:15-16
Brothers and sisters, let’s think about this from a human perspective. Even when it’s just people making a binding agreement that is signed, sealed, and delivered, no one can come along afterwards and start adding addendums, right? Wouldn’t the same apply to God? Promises were spoken. A deal was made. With Abraham, and, crucially, with his seed, his progeny. Not with the whole lot of his progeny, but with one in particular – which is why he says, “And with your (singular) seed,” meaning one, namely Christ. Galatians 3:15-16 |MAV
I will never forget the comedy bit I saw in my formative years – was it Laurel and Hardy? the Three Stooges? One of them is wearing a tie that is simply too long and won’t do at all. So the other trims off the tie with a handy pair of scissors. But it’s not enough. So he snips again. Still not right. Snip. No, more. Snip. This goes on until the tie is down to three inches long. Considering the fact that Paul is dealing with religious circumcisers carrying their own sanctified scissors to snip off foreskins, it’s an appropriate image. Supplementational subtraction. Adding by taking away. We see the wonderful simplicity of promise, of Jesus, and it simply won’t do at all. Just one wee snip will do. But it’s never just one wee snip. Jesus plus, promise plus, always results in religious snipping leading to a diminished, truncated cross. Religious addenda and supplements always leave Jesus buried and us diminished. A promise was spoken. A deal was made. The singular Christ beckons.
What addenda to Jesus, to the promise of God, are you still trying to carry? Where has the enemy of your soul been snipping at the divine simplicity of Jesus?
Jesus, I drop the scissors with which I would presume to snip away at the simplicity of your love, your grace, your promise. Let me bask today in the simple reality of your Presence – plus nothing.
